Watsonville organic produce company launches marinade

WATSONVILLE — If you’re a friend or family member of Andy Martin, chances are, you’ve sampled his secret sauce.

For the past 14 months, Martin’s worked on perfecting his Wet Rubz Organic Santa Maria Marinade. The organic sauce recently hit the shelves in local retailers including New Leaf Community Markets and Deluxe Foods of Aptos.

From eggplant to chicken, Martin has used his marinade in every possible way. While the sauce works well with vegetables, he said, Martin especially loves to marinading a nice slab of meat.

“I had a number of friends who were the guinea pigs,” Martin said. “I think my family, as of last August, said, ‘No more tri-tip, dad.’ ”

Along with his wife Aimee Martin, Martin runs A&A Organic Farms in Watsonville, which has distributes certified organic produce to small to mid-size farms for the past 20 years.

Martin set his sight on making sauce, though, when he craved a marinade that overflows with garlic, onions, olive oil and spices.

“If you look at a bottle of Wet Rubz, it’s so much stuff,” said Martin, who lives in Aptos. “It’s really a bottle of really good things. It’s not just a bottle of soy sauce.”

Martin relied on his culinary background to create the sauce. He’s worked at various kitchens and restaurants, and owned and operated Paiolo’s Italian restaurant in Aptos for six years.

Now that he’s created the product, Martin said, he’s ready to share his marinade with the world.

“Now we’re out trying to get it into the supermarkets, to get it into people’s mouths,” Martin said. “We want people to see how nice it is, how great it is, and how easy it is to create a great meal. I think we’ll create a following.”
